Protect Yourself From Scams
It’s important to stay aware of the many kinds of fraud that surround us. Several fraud schemes are highlighted here, but there are many more. Click the link at the bottom to read the full article!
Tax Scams
They claim you owe taxes and without immediate payment, there will be a warrant placed for your arrest.
Quick Tips: The IRS will never contact you by phone to demand funds. The IRS communicates in writing. If you received a letter from the IRS, verify the contact information on www.irs.gov and respond quickly if valid.
Romance and Sweetheart Scams
Often the fraudster makes an approach online through a dating website or social media. Recently divorced, widowed, or otherwise lonely individuals are often targeted. An “instant connection” is made and the relationship progresses rapidly. The fraudster may claim to be overseas on a business trip, volunteering abroad, or in the military.
Once trust is established, the person requests money to meet up with you, or for a charitable cause or emergency. You may be asked to drain your savings or pull from retirement accounts. Funds are often requested by wire or overnight delivery. They may also send you a check and request that you cash it on their behalf. Once the funds are received the fraudster may maintain contact in an attempt to obtain additional funds, or they may cease communication immediately.
Quick Tips: Be extremely cautious about sending money overseas, especially if you have never met the receiver in person. Talk to a trusted family member or friend about the situation.
Family Emergency Scams
You receive a phone call from someone claiming to be a relative. The caller expresses immediate danger in the form of incarceration, a hostage situation, accident, etc. They hope to initiate a fight-or-flight response that will cause you to react quickly and not think through the situation. Funds are requested immediately through wire transfer, overnight payment, or providing gift card information.
Quick Tips: Call or text your relative directly or reach out to another family member who can confirm they are safe. Don’t always trust caller ID or the incoming phone number. Phone numbers can be spoofed to appear to be coming from the actual source.
